Three betting firms owned by William Hill are to pay penalties of ₤ 19.2 m for failing to secure consumers and weak anti-money laundering controls.

The record charge follows the Gambling Commission found new clients had the ability to wager large amounts over short periods without appropriate checks.

Despite the charges, Mr Rhodes stated there were now "indications of enhancement" in gambling operators' behaviour.

"There are signs that the industry is doing more to make betting more secure and minimizing the possibility of criminal funds entering their businesses," he said.
